private lessons
There is a reason why credentialed, force-free trainers rarely get reality shows — good training involves zero drama! At High Ten, we encourage you and your dog to work as teammates towards a mutual goal, rather than use fear or pain to get quick "results."
For some issues, we make significant progress in only one lesson. However, for more serious or longstanding issues, be prepared for a training commitment that spans weeks or months. Although we may only meet a few times, you and your dog will receive a plan for daily at-home practice, and we are always available to support you. Improvement happens in small steps that add up over time.

see it from the dog's PERSPECTIVE
Manners
For your dog, learning to live by human rules is like learning a foreign language. With any language learning, we start with the basics and methodically build skills until we're fluent. Similarly, for your dog, living “fluently” in the human world will involve regular practice to develop skills that don't come naturally to him/her.
Behavior Issues
Many factors, both external (like your environment) and internal (like your dog's stress level), affect training outcomes. We'll create a training plan that takes all these factors into consideration, always prioritizing your dog's emotional health. To use a swimming analogy, we will start behavior modification with "water wings" to help your dog gain trust and confidence, rather than risk the fallout of a "sink or swim" approach.

DURING your lesson
The first private lesson begins with a consultation, where we create a training plan for your dog's behavior or manners concerns. Then, we get training right away! We'll use positive reinforcement techniques, designed by veterinary behaviorists, agility coaches, and force-free training experts.
For serious issues, we start to lay a training foundation during the first lesson, and then build your dog's skills in future lessons. After each lesson, you'll get a detailed plan to practice at home. (See the video below for more.)

A team effort
Like the client of a therapist, language instructor, or dietician, success is a combination of many factors. It would be irresponsible of High Ten to guarantee particular results, but we promise to provide clear guidance and judgement-free support as you work through your dog's manners or behavior issues. True change takes time, persistence, and teamwork.
